Why Lagos Lawmakers Support Buhari’s Decision To Head Petroleum Ministry

Some representatives of Lagos state House of Assembly on Saturday, October 3, expressed their approval of President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to head the Ministry of Petroleum and explained why.

The lawmakers who spoke with NAN in separate interviews said that such a development would allow the country to deal with serious economic challenges.

They further stated that Buhari, an experienced petroleum minister with  unblemioshed record, would serve for the good of Nigerians.

Adekanye Oladele said:

“It is better for him (Buhari) to oversee Ministry of Petroleum. It is not the first time this is being done.

“Nigeria operates a monolithic economy and if you look at what has happened in the petroleum sector, you would see that it is better for him to oversee the ministry as he has headed it before.”

Oladele lamented over the state that rich in resources Nigeria had been dragged to:

“Given the human and natural resources the country is blessed with, we are not supposed to be where we are now.”

Setonji David claimed:

“The president wants to bring about change in the condition of the masses and oil is the main stream of our earnings, so the change must start from there.

“If we still get it wrong in the oil sector, there is little or nothing we could do to create a prosperous and wealthy Nigeria.

“The level of brazen corruption and decadence we have experienced over the years in this sector of our economy makes it imperative to look for a pragmatic approach which can only be given by the president himself. The government is taking every necessary step to put smile on the faces of ordinary Nigerians through infrastructural development, employment and checking wastages.”

Segun Olulade, on his part, stressed the importance for President Buhari to take full control of the ministry to fulfill his election promises and finally bring positive change.

It should be recalled that Buhari named himself as a petroleum minister in the course of his visit to New York, USA. His decision generated many reactions among Nigerians. Some backed the move, the others simply mocked it.
