A 35-year-old Nigerian, Oshanugor James Anyasi, was sentenced by a Vietnamese court to 12 years of imprisonment over a love scam.

According to Thanh Nien News, the verdict was announced on Tuesday, September 29. The case has started in February when the convict was arrested at an airport flying to Cambodia.

The convict started virtual romantic relationships with women and then convinced them to make transactions.

The investigation proved he was not acting alone. A Vietnamese woman and two Malaysia-based Nigerians, the alleged masterminds, were on his team. The lady is currently serving a 3-year sentence given in February for the crime, while the duo are on the run.

The scammers met each other in September 2012. They came up with a scheme how to defraud the rich Vietnamese women. The gang met them online, pretended to fall in love with them. They also promised the unsuspecting ladies expensive gifts, were making fake phone calls and kept sending multiple e-mails.

Finally, when the victims displayed trust, the fraudsters asked them to send money as ‘shipping fees’ to designated accounts.

Anyasi, who was pretending to be a British businessman and did most of the chatting with the women, received just 15%. His Vietnamese accomplice got 10%. The remaining money was taken by the two suspected masterminds.
