SEE How Ayodele Fayose Called President Muhammadu Buhari

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state harshly criticised Muhammadu Buhari, claiming that his policy threatens the unity of the country.

Fayose blasts Buhari over northern appointments, calling him the president of the northern Nigeria.

The president of northern Nigeria – this is much more appropriate title for Muhammadu Buhari in Ayodele Fayose’s opinion.

Governor of Ekiti state issued a statement on Monday, criticising Muhammadu Buhari’s latest appointments in his cabinet.

In his statement governor Fayose claimed that Buhari rules like the president of the northern Nigeria because from 31 major appointments made so far by Buhari the vast majority of those appointed come from the northern Nigeria, while only seven hail from south of the country.

Under Buhari, are people from Southern Nigeria only meant to be hounded and harassed by anti-corruption agencies and the Department of State Security (DSS) while those from the North are meant to enjoy federal government juicy appointments?” Fayose peppered his statement with a rhetorical question.

Fayose also added that “they said Buhari made the appointments on merit and I wish to ask whether there are no competent people in the APC in the southern part of Nigeria, especially south-east where no one has been appointed.

Are they saying Igbo leader like Ogbonnaya Onu, who graduated with a first class honours degree in chemical engineering at the University of Lagos, is not competent to be appointed as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)?” he concluded his statement with another question.

There was drama in Ekiti state this morning as Governor Ayodele Fayose lurked-around the state secretariat to fish-out perpetual late comers.

The governor showed up unexpectedly at the government facility around 8.10am in the company of the head of service.

There had been reports that civil servants were showing a nonchalant attitude to work, so the governor surprised them with a personal visit.

What Police Has To Say About Arrest Of Boko Haram Members In Enugu State

The Enugu state police command has said it has no knowledge of the arrest of any Boko Haram member in the state.

Responding to enquiries on Monday, August 31, the command also said it was not aware of the presence of Boko Haram terrorists in the state, as announced by the Department of State Security in a statement released on Sunday, August 30, Punch reports.

The DSS had announced that it arrested 20 suspected Boko Haram commanders in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Plateau and Gombe states between July 8 and August 25, 2015.

Contrary to the report of the security agency, the Enugu state police said information available to it did not disclose the presence of the insurgents in the state and it had no knowledge of any investigations, or arrest concerning the sect.

The spokesman of the state command, Ebere Amaraizu said: “There is no case of Boko Haram investigated by the Command, neither was there any arrest by the Command.”

He noted that unlike the case in Lagos and other areas reported in the statement, the DSS did not provide details of the presence, and arrest, of Boko Haram commanders in Enugu.

According to Amaraizu, the police would continue to keep the state safe, relying on the already established proactive measures which has kept the state and its environs safe so far.

In reaction to the announcement by DSS, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth wing blamed the presence of the Islamist sect in Enugu on the alleged transfer of Boko Haram prisoners to Ekwulobia prisons in Anambra state.

They also blamed the state governors in the South East and the South East chapter of the All Progressives Congress, for keeping mute against the alleged transfer.

President of the group, Okechukwu Isiguzoro said: “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing is always vigilant, we are determined to secure Igboland against any form of foreign aggression and we will do everything possible to make sure that Boko Haram does not operate in Enugu or any other part of the South East.”

He also called on all youths in the South East and Igbo speaking parts of the South South to be vigilant.

Boko Haram operates mainly in the northern part of Nigeria with Borno state serving as its epicenter.

Report has it that the dreaded Boko Haram sect is trying to expand its territory beyond northern Nigeria, to include the commercial capital Lagos.

Editors to media owners: Don’t owe your workers

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged some media owners to stop owing workers salaries.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its conference in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State capital, the editors said journalists’ working conditions should be improved.

“Media owners must ensure regular payment of salaries as well as provide improved working conditions commensurate with the efforts of media practitioners,” NGE said.

The communiqué was signed by NGE’s president Garba Deen Mohammad and General Secretary Victoria Ibanga.

About 300 Editors drawn from the print, electronic and online media across the country attended the conference which held from August 26 to 30 and featured presentation of papers from scholars and giants in the media industry.

They include Professor Etannibi Alemika of the Department of Sociology, University of Jos; Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Abuja, Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma; and Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard Newspapers Mr. Gbenga Adefaye.

The editors urged the media to remain steadfast in their reportage of events as well as be facilitators and agents of the positive change that Nigerians desire.

NGE said Nigerians must unite to build a nation that is prosperous and secure, irrespective of political, ethnic and religious differences.

It said steps taken so far by the President Buhari-led government to tackle terrorism are commendable. It urged Nigerians not to politicise or ethnicise the war against the scourge, stressing that much more must be done by all stakeholders to ensure that every part of country is secure.

On graft, NGE said: “The present administration’s war against corruption is commendable but that every effort must be made to ensure that it is not selective. Every Nigerian must support the battle to eradicate the monster which has adversely affected the country.”

The communiqué added:  “Media practitioners must play their agenda setting role and make conscious effort to raise the level and quality of public debate by bringing issues of national interest to the fore.

“Editors must strive continually to improve their skills and acquire new skills that would prepare them for life outside the Editorial chair. Editors must do more to bring about the change Nigerians are yearning for by playing the watchdog role assigned them by Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Nigerians must unite and support efforts of the government of President Buhari to revive the nation’s economy. There must be a conscious effort to re-orient Nigerians to embrace values that would bring about the desired change.

“That the Governors’ Forum make more efforts to build synergy among themselves and function as a Peer Review Mechanism, for sharing experiences and learning from each other policies and programmes that would make their states better.”

The editors praised President Buhari for appointing two past NGE presidents Mr. Femi Adesina and Mallam Garba Shehu as his Special Adviser and Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity.

Three people suspected to be members of rival cult groups were yesterday, August 30, slaughtered in Elega and Ago-Odo areas of Abeokuta North local government, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital during a clash.

Information revealed that the fracas which started at pub house inside the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, climaxed into the killing of the three victims.

It was gathered that the first victim identified as Ibrahim Babatunde Alamutu who was said to be the leader of Eiye confraternity shot at a member of Aiye confraternity but that the bullet didn’t penetrate.

Sources, who preferred anonymity confirmed to Journalists who visited the scene that Alamutu who was popularly referred to as Emir was attacked immediately after his wedding introduction held at Elega Junction in the area.

The sources also said that his throat was slashed while his esophagus and his left palm were removed from his body.

In what appeared like a reprisal attack, members of Eiye Confraternity reportedly stormed Ago-Odo around 7.30 am where another two victims were killed.

World’s Oldest Koran Is Older Than Prophet Muhammad, But How Is It Possible?

The world’s oldest Koran is older than the Prophet Muhammad, experts from the University of Oxford who radiocarbon-dated its pages claim.

Fragments of the manuscript, found within the pages of another Koran from the late seventh century, is believed to be between 1,448 and 1,371 years old. The carbon-dating tests showed that the pages of the holy book was written in ink in an early form of Arabic script on sheep skin and were among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran.

The pages contain parts of the Suras, or chapters, 18 to 20

The pages contain parts of the Suras, or chapters, 18 to 20. And the scholars believe that those fragments may have been written after the death of Prophet Muhammad, as they were produced between 568AD and 645AD, while the dates usually given for the founder of Islam are between 570AD and 632AD.

Historian Tom Holland, commented on the discovery: “It destabilises, to put it mildly, the idea that we can know anything with certainty about how the Koran emerged – and that in turn has implications for the history of Muhammad and the Companions.”

The pages are believed to be among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran

Keith Small, from the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, added: “This gives more ground to what have been peripheral views of the Koran’s genesis, like that Muhammad and his early followers used a text that was already in existence and shaped it to fit their own political and theological agenda, rather than Muhammad receiving a revelation from heaven.”

The Prophet Muhammad is thought to have founded Islam sometime after 610AD and the first Muslim community was founded in Medina in 622AD. During this time the Koran was memorised and recited orally but Caliph Abu Bakr, the first leader of the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death, ordered the Koranic material to be collected into a book. The final authoritative written form was not completed until 650AD under the third leader Caliph Uthman.

Judge Not Happy As Saraki, Ekweremadu Shuns Hearing Of Suit Seeking Their Sack

Justice Ademola, hearing the suit filed by dissatisfied senators over the election of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his Deputy President, Ike Ekweremadu and three others has frowned at the non-appearance of the defendants in court on Monday, August 31.

Although it was not compulsory for Saraki, Ekweremadu and the other defendants in the suit to attend proceedings in person, they were however required to be represented by their lawyers.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

According to The Nation, Justice Ademola, who was uncomfortable that none of the defendants was represented in court, noted that the choice of Monday as the hearing date was with the consent of lawyers to the parties to the suit.

The judge, following the decision by plaintiffs’ lawyer, Mamman Osuman (SAN) to withdraw his motion for interlocutory injunction, struck out the motion.

Justice Ademola concurred with Osuman that the motion, which sought to restrain the Senate leadership from constituting adhoc committees, has been overtaken by events, and that the prayers contained in the motion were similar to those contained in the plaintiffs’ ex-parte application which Justice Kolawole earlier refused to grant.

Meanwhile, Justice Ademola’s time as the vacation judge will soon end, and he is expected to return the case file to the court’s Chief Judge for reassignment at the end of the court’s vacation.

Other defendants in the suit are the National Assembly, the Clerks of the National Assembly and the Clerk of the Senate.

Senators Abu Ibrahim, Kabir Marafa, Ajayi  Boroffice, Olugbenga Ashafa and Suleiman Hunkuyi are the plaintiffs.

They are contending the election of Saraki and Ekweremadu as President and Deputy President, saying it was invalid on the ground that the Senate Standing Orders 2015 used for the election was a forged document.

The plaintiffs maintained that since the Senate Standing Order 2011, which was the valid Senate Rules as at the proclamation of the 8th Senate on June 9, was not acknowledged to have been genuinely altered before the election, the 2015 Rules could not be said to be a legitimate document.

They stated, in a supporting affidavit, that the Senate Standing ‎Orders 2015 was “contrived” from the amendment of the 2011 version of the Orders without following its (the 2011 edition’s) relevant provisions and those of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The plaintiffs also argued that the said amendment was in breach of the “prescriptive procedures” stipulated by the extant provisions of section 60 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Rule 110(1), (2), (3), (4) and (5) of the Senate Standing Orders 2011 (as amended).

They therefore prayed the court for the following reliefs:

“A declaration that the Senate Standing Order 2011(as amended) is the proper, valid, constitutional and subsisting Rules/Standing Orders of the 8th Senate.

“A  declaration that the Senate Standing Order 2015(as amended), not being a product of any legitimate amendment pursuant to the extant provisions of Rule 110 of the Senate Standing Orders 2011 (as amended), is invalid, illegal, unconstitutional.

“A declaration that the election of the 1st and 2nd defendants as the President and Deputy  President of the Senate of the 8th Senate pursuant to the Senate Standing Orders 2015 and contrary to the provisions of Rules 3(3)(e) and (k), Chapter II of the Senate Standing Orders 2011, is illegal and unconstitutional

“An order setting aside the purported election of the 1st and 2nd defendants as Senate President and Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate; an order setting aside the Senate Standing Orders 2015 and an order directing the 8th Senate to elect its presiding officers in accordance with the provisions of Section 54 of the Constitution and Rules 3(3) (e) and (k) of the Senate Standing Orders 2011.”

Meanwhile, the Senate president, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, led the Nigerian delegation to participate in the 4th United Nations Conference of Parliamentary Heads held at the organisation’s headquarters in New York, the United States.

Faulty card reader cannot invalidate election – Court

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has held that a faulty card reader cannot be a ground for invalidating an election.

The court held that the Electoral Act (2010) as amended does not recognise the malfunctioning of a card reader as one of the factors that can lead to the nullification of an election.

This, the appellate court held, is because the Electoral Act predates the introduction of the card reader.

The Court of Appeal stated this in a verdict on a cross-appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging parts of the Governorship Election Tribunal’s verdict in the case of Jimi Agbaje versus Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and others.

APC had filed the cross-appeal based on two grounds. In the first ground, it said the tribunal erred in law when, having held that Paragraph 14 of Agbaje’s petition challenged Ambode’s nomination, went ahead to hold that it was a valid ground.

The party said any complaint about a pre-election issue falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal or Lagos State High Court, therefore, the tribunal ought to have declined jurisdiction.

The party also asked that Agbaje’s petition be struck out because its paragraph 13b which complained about faulty card readers did not qualify as a ground to challenge the April 11 election.

The Court of Appeal, in a judgment by Justice Obande Festus Ogbuinya, resolved the first issue in Agbaje and PDP’s favour, and the second issue in APC’s favour.

A copy of the judgment, delivered on August 26, was obtained by our correspondent on Monday. Other justices on the panel were A. J. Abdulkadir, Mohammed Danjuma, Emmenuel Agim and Saidu Hussaini.

Agbaje, the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ambode and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) were the cross-respondents.

The appellate court held that both the High Courts and the tribunal have concurrent jurisdiction over the issue of a candidate’s qualification/disqualification.

AGAIN! Fayose Attacks Buhari, This Is What He Called Him

The governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has once again taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing him of operating as a president of the Northern Nigeria only.

According to Fayose, the steps Buhari has taken since May 29, 2015, when he was sworn in, are tainted in ethnic and tribal colouration which is detrimental to the unity of the country, Vanguard reports.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday, August 31, by his special assistant on public communications and new media, Lere Olayinka.

The governor criticized the president’s appointments so far, saying it was wrong of him to have made 31 major appointments and only seven were from the South while 24 were from the North.

Appointments made by the President so far negate the principle of federal character. It appears the unity in diversity of Nigeria is being taken for granted by the President.

READ ALSO: Fayose Threatens To Shut Down Banks Over Taxes

Under Buhari, are people from Southern Nigeria only meant to be hounded and harassed by anti-corruption agencies and the Department of State Security (DSS) while those from the North are meant to enjoy federal government juicy appointments?” he questioned.

Fayose wondered if there are no competent people from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southern part of Nigeria, especially South-East where no one has been appointed by Buhari.

He asked: “Are they saying Igbo leader like Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who graduated with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos, is not competent to be appointed as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)?”

Governor Fayose also expressed worry over the construction of Lokoja-Abuja roads which has stopped and that of Lagos-Ibadan expressway which has been slowed down, adding that they are the major roads linking the Southern part of Nigeria with the North.

The governor said the appointments so far, reminds him of President Buhari’s tenure as Military Head of State.

I hope the President is not seeing Nigeria of today as that of 1984 because doing so will mean that he has turned himself to a northern president, thereby justifying his notion that those who gave him 97 percent votes must get more benefits than those who gave him five percent votes,” he added.

Fayose noted that the country can only move forward if there was equity and fairness, as the principle of federal character was enshrined into the constitution, taking into consideration the ethnic diversity of the country.

He added that it was not in the best interest of Nigeria if the president was running the country like he was a Northern Nigeria’s President.

Recall that in June, Governor Fayose had written to President Buhari to grant him the honour of naming the minister that would come from Ekiti state. He said he would be happy to nominate a worthy candidate for appointment in the president’s cabinet.

Buhari has made a number of appointments, which many have condemned, saying he was pursuing a Northern agenda.

Sylva pleads for forgiveness from kinsmen

The Bayelsa State leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, at the weekend begged his kinsmen in Okpoama, Brass local government area of the state, for forgiveness.

Sylva, a former governor of the state, reportedly urged his kinsmen to put his shortcomings in office behind them and welcome the new dawn in the state powered by the APC.

The former governor was said to have spoken during a unity rally and reception held in his honour by the Traditional Ruler of the Okpoama Kingdom, King Ebitimi Banigo.

He recalled how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) denied him a ticket as a sitting governor to run for second term in office.

But he said his homecoming as the state leader of the APC made him realise that only God can truly forgive.

He said: “If I have learnt any lesson from my travails, it is only the fact that it is only God that forgives. I have forgiven those that offended me. I also urged those of you that I have offended to forgive me.”

Sylva described the decision of the Traditional Ruler and the Council of Chiefs in Okpoama kingdom to honour him as “a blessing.”

He called on the people of the community to consider the rally as a symbol of renewed unity in the kingdom.

This Guy Dives 100 Feet Into Mysterious Channel And Finds Something Incredible

Anatoly Beloshchin is an adventurous Russian photographer. He saw a lot of amazing stuff – from dangerous surfaces of the remote Antarctic to whales, manatees and sharks in the wild.

But his latest discovery is the most incredible!

1

Recently, Beloshchin’s team headed to Mexico. They planned to explore the cenotes of Yucatán Peninsula (a cenote is a sink-hole created when the wall of a cave collapses.)

2

The Angelita cenote, in particular, was one of the place to probe. Just look at the magnificence of the subterranean channel!

deep

Beloshchin traversed the depths of the channel and found something that looked totally out of place… An underwater river.

4

The underwater river is the result of a natural phenomenon known as halocline. This is when two bodies of water with different salt densities meet and separate.

5

This river is just really salty water which is divided from the fresh water by a foot deep layer of hydrogen sulfide.

Why Jonathan, Patience, Wike Failed To Remove Me As Rivers Governor – Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers state, has stated that the prayers said on his behalf by priests and other Christians helped him to stand against his adversaries.

Rotimi Amaechi’s Political “Legacy” And Future

Rotimi Amaechi

According to Amaechi, the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Patience and the present governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, wanted him to be removed before the expiration of his tenure at all costs.

The former governor made a statement while taking part in the dedication service of Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Elechi Beach, Port Harcourt, on Sunday, August 30.

Daily Post reports that the ceremony was attended by Dakuku Peterside, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Ibim Semenitari, former commissioner for information, Tony Okocha, former chief of staff in government house, and others.

“I want to thank the priests, almost all of you were praying for me. If not for your prayers, I would probably have been a former governor a long time ago. The president wanted me out at all cost; the present governor wanted me out at all cost and the wife of the president wanted me out at all cost. They did everything they did. Let me say one thing: they had everything except God.

“When I landed at the airport, I saw soldiers but I said I did not need them. When they were in power, they were using soldiers to chase us about. In the present government that will not continue. You don’t solve impunity; if they had impunity before, we will have rule of law now. I thank all of you publicly for the support and prayers,” he said.

A day before, August 29, the ex-governor accused Governor Nyesom Wike of having been involved in corruption. Amaechi insisted he had documents proving his point.

“The funny thing about the young man is that he knows I know him. I was his governor, I have documents to show that he is a contractor. I am not a thief; so I don’t know what this young man is talking about,” he said.

Boko Haram: US condemns recent attacks

United States (US) has strongly condemned the recent attacks in the North East of Nigeria.

In a press Statement by John Kirby U.S. Department of State Spokesperson, Washington, D.C. reassured Nigeria of continued support in the fight against terrorism.

The statement reads: “The United States strongly condemns the raids on villages in northeast Nigeria on August 28, and we extend our sympathies to the families and loved ones of the civilians who were killed and injured.

“These recent raids are just additional examples of the horrific and indiscriminate violence that Boko Haram continues to use to terrorize civilians in northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region.

“August 27 marked the 500th day since Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls from their school in Chibok.  We send our continued condolences to the families and loved ones of the girls who remain missing.

“The kidnapping of the school girls in Chibok galvanized international attention for the Boko Haram conflict.  It is one of many attacks, kidnappings, raids and other acts of indiscriminate violence that continue on a frequent basis in Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

“The United States continues to support the governments and people of the Lake Chad Basin region in their ongoing struggle to degrade and defeat Boko Haram.

“We contribute to these efforts through a number of security and counterterrorism assistance programs, which provide intelligence, advisors, training, equipment, and logistics.  We actively provide support on a bilateral basis and through the Multinational Joint Task Force, which the Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin are standing up to coordinate the regional efforts to counter Boko Haram.”

Akon’s Georgia mansion is becoming a big problem for him as yet another contractor is claiming he didn’t get paid for working on the superstar entrepreneur, producer and singer’s floors.

Capital Floors, a contractor that worked on Akon’s Georgia mansion, has filed a $15,000 lien against the troublesome home, which is small compared to the $36,765 filed by a different company back in January.

This contractor, however, said he did get paid a little along the way and the $15k represents the unpaid balance. He adds still that a lawsuit for another $50k in damages may be in the offing.

Meanwhile, Akon is hoping to provide electricity to 600 million people in Africa with his ‘Akon Lighting Africa’ project. A solar academy is also being launched in Bamako, Mali to train Africans on solar-powered electric systems and micro-grids.

Police arrest doctor for operating abortion clinic

The Managing Director of the Ofure Royal Medical Centre located at Upper Uwa Street, Benin City, Dr. Omokhomion Kingsley, has been arrested for allegedly conducting abortion at his clinic.

Dr. Omokhomion was arrested by operatives of Zonal Criminal Investigation Bureau, Zone 5’ police headquarters, Benin City, after complaints that a woman’s pregnancy was terminated.

Police sources said its operatives brought a patient who posed as pregnant woman and asked for abortion.

The doctor and four nurses at the hospital were arrested while trying to carry out the abortion.

Items recovered at the clinic, according to source included, a lifeless foetus and hospital equipment suspected to be abortion apparatus.

The raid on the clinic followed complaints received by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Mr. Musa Daura, that the woman whose pregnancy was terminated is on a danger list at another hospital.

The acting spokesman for Zone, Emeka Iheanacho, confirmed the doctor’s arrest.

He said they are investigating a case of abortion and that the hospital has been under surveillance.

“All of them were arrested because they were involved in the act and they are telling us their involvement in the act.

“As I am talking to you the person involved is still laying critically in a hospital,” Iheanacho said.

Pastor Converts Church Members To Muslims, Turns Church To Mosque (Photos)

A Rwandan pastor has made the record of conducting the largest conversion of Christians to Muslims on Tuesday, August 25.

a

Africa Metro reports that the pastor, Salim Mikdad, converted all 480 members of his congregation to change their faiths.

According to one of the members, they were at the church for when their pastor forced them to convert to Islam. Pastor Mikdad also converted the church premises into a mosque during the conversion ceremony. This is said to have happened after an Islamic cleric had preached to Pastor Mikdad and succeeded in converting him to Islam.

b

According to Africa Metro, Rwanda is a predominantly Christian country but of late, has seen a gradual rise in its Muslim population. About 56.9% of Rwandans are Roman Catholic, 26% are Protestant, 11.1% are Seventh day Adventist and only 4.6% are Muslim, most of them being Sunni.

Islam started growing in Rwanda after the country’s 1994 genocide as both Catholic and Protestant churches helped to make the killing of about 800,000 people possible by giving moral sanction to the murders. Churches have longed played ethnic politics themselves, favouring the Tutsi during the colonial period then switching allegiance to the Hutu after 1959, sending a message that ethnic discrimination was consistent with church teaching.

Meanwhile, hell was let loose yesterday, Sunday, August 30, at the United Methodist Church, in the Oshodi area of Lagos, when church members pursued their pastor off the pulpit.

Anti-graft war not politicised – Lawmaker

A lawmaker representing Akure North/South Federal Constituency, Mr Afe Olowookere has faulted the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu administration was targeted at its members.

He attributed the endemic nature of corruption in Nigeria to obsolete laws where corrupt people had always taken advantage of these laws to escape justice.

Olowookere spoke at the flag-off of construction of the Community Town Hall at Emiloro in Akure South local government area of Ondo state.

He assured that the eighth National Assembly would do everything within its power to get rid of these laws to fortify the fight against the menace.

His words;”So far, I’ve not seen how this anti-graft war has been politicised. PDP members are protesting that the probe is targeted at them. But my question is since 1999, which party had been ruling us at the centre?

“If the federal government is probing activities at the centre, which party will be affected? Is it not PDP. The probe has not been extended to the states where other parties are involved in governance at that level.

Olowookere emphasised that the crusade was not targeted at any particular party saying “As a member of the National Assembly, I support it and I am going to encourage my colleagues to do everything necessary to support it.”

He lamented the lack of confidence and trust in Nigerian politicians, urging the political class to do something about it by fulfilling promises made during electioneering.‎

According to him; “during my electioneering campaign, I could realise that people have lost faith. They have lost confidence and trust in politicians.

“They don’t believe us again. When you get to any community and say you will do this or that, the people will just express pessimism.”

Fayose vows to close down banks over tax evasion

… Locks out civil servants for late coming

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has threatened to close down four commercial banks in the state over their alleged refusal to pay several millions of naira as taxes to government coffers.

Fayose, who issued the threat on Monday while holding a meeting with retirees in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, revealed that he had obtained a court order to shut down the affected banks.

The governor, who accused the banks of shortchanging government despite making huge profits from the state, said he would not look the other way and allow banks and other corporate organizations to defraud the state.

He warned the affected banks and other businesses owing government taxes and levies to pay same or risk being closed down.

Fayose also reiterated his decision to make all private nursery, primary and secondary schools in the state pay newly-imposed taxes before resumption by middle of September.

Each of the private schools is expected to pay N150,000 into government coffers before reopening for the new academic session, while anybody who purchases one cow to be slaughtered for any occasion will now pay N1,000.

Fayose also told the pensioners that he is targeting haulage vehicles passing through the state as taxes would now be imposed on them to generate revenue into government purse.

He pleaded with the pensioners to be patient with him, saying he has been battling with the debt left behind by the immediate past administration and promised to meet their demands as soon as financial situation improves.

Meanwhile, Fayose on Monday caught hundreds of civil servants by surprise when he stormed the state Secretariat unannounced for an unscheduled visit.

The governor, who arrived the secretariat at 8:00am, ordered that the main gate be locked against latecomers most of whom were unaware that the state chief executive was around.

Fayose, who wore a black suit over sky blue shirt and black trousers, stood on the road leading to the secretariat where he personally caught the erring civil servants.

The rapper’s speech is filled with a lot of surprises, the most notable being his desire to stick with and defend the art to any lengths.

“I will die for the art, and for what I believe in, and the art ain’t always gonna be polite,” he said.

The rapper also admitted to having smoked a bit of substance before getting on stage, even as he paused and motioned inarticulately a few times in the course of his speech.

But nothing came more shocking than his daring announcement on the night when, he closed his eyes for split seconds as, he went:

And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

The speech ended, obviously, in a few minutes of hysteria from the audience as West descended from the podium having concluded his announcement.

Pakistan, India Clash Over Nigerian Students Arrested ‘On Their Way To ISIS’

The Pakistani and Indian high commissioners to Nigeria have disagreed over reports that the two Nigerian students, who were arrested on August 7 in India, were on their way to join the terrorist group Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS).

Nigerian students arrested in India

Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu.

The Punch reports that Ajjampur Ghanashyam, the Indian high commissioner, insisted that the two youths from Kano, Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu, were on their way to Pakistan to join ISIS. However, Lieutenant General Agha Farooq (retd.), the Pakistani high commissioner, disagreed with his counterpart and described the report as false.

Farooq stressed that the students could not breach the Indian/Pakistani borders, which were fortified with armed soldiers, underground mines and electrified barbed wire.

According to Farooq, the allegation against the youths was an attempt to demonize them “just because they are Nigerian Muslims.”

In a recent interview, Ghanashyam has told journalists that the high commission was worried that radicalised Nigerian students may abandon their studies in India and travel out to join the ISIS.

Ghanashyam noted that since the arrest of the two Nigerians, visa requirements have not changed, adding that the mission, however, is more careful about visa issuance to applicants.

READ ALSO: READ Who Invited Top ISIS Leader To Nigeria

“Visa requirements have been on the web, everybody knows, but you see, you can’t locate the mind of a man to find out what his intentions are. If he has an admission letter from our school, and you have seen it with your own eyes, then you will give him visa, but now you have to think twice.

“You don’t know, but now we believe we are taken for a ride, but now you have to go back and tell them to look after these boys and girls and make sure they don’t go out here and there, to make sure they finish their course and board a plane to go back to Nigeria.

“The mission will be more careful. Usually, we give visas to about 10 to 15% of applicants and this may further be reviewed,” he said.

Commenting on the arrest of the two boys, the high commissioner said that they were issued visas because they had all necessary documents including letters of admission from an Indian institution.

“These two boys from Kano said they wanted to study in Bangalore, we believed them and gave them student visas. They went to Bangalore last September. They spent one year, then they decided to go to ISIS, and they were trapped near the Pakistani border.

“I hope they are the exception and aberration, not the trend. I hope it would be the last of their kind. We have an association of close to 30,000 Nigerians who have graduated from India and we have 5,900 of students who are studying in India, it is quite worrying that if they go to India and from there, they go to ISIS, we would have a big issue on our hands,” he said.

READ ALSO: Boko Haram And ISIS To Take Libya And Attack The Vatican

However, the Pakistani ambassador dismissed the allegations against Nigerian students who were arrested by Border Security Force personnel in Punjab, India.

Farooq stressed that it was practically impossible for students to join ISIS by going through Pakistan because they would have to pass through three countries to reach Syria.

“From the pictures of the borders, you can see that there is no way the students could enter Pakistan from India because the border is well guarded with soldiers and other high-tech gadgets and it is controlled by India.

“The report that the Nigerian students were going to join ISIS is a hoax; how come it was reported by only Indian media? They just want to demonise the students because they are Nigerian Muslims,” he added.

Buhari hails D’Tigers’ victory at FIBA championship

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday congratulated the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, on the team victory over Angola in Sunday’s final of the FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, joined other sports loving Nigerians in applauding D’Tigers’ exhilarating 74-65 victory over the Angolans, which also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the men’s basketball event at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
