In the face of the myriad of troubles faced in the land, Nigerian singer Ebisan seems to see things from a different stance. In the wake of Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration, this comes as a breath of fresh air.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard the singer revealed her love for Nigeria, especially the resilient and standout nature of the people. She credited the Nigerian spirit with positive attributes, saying “[the people] refuse to have a defeatist attitude [no matter the odds]”.

She explains further: “There are so many things [that make Nigerians incredible] but I’ll mention just two. The way we deal with adversity is amazing to me. When going through tough times or hard conditions, we refuse to have a defeatist attitude. I believe Nigerians are the most resilient people in the world. The second thing about us that I love is that wherever you go, you always know when there’s a Nigerian around. We stand out; we are a unique and are very special people and we need to apply our smartness to more positive things.
“No we don’t act like we’re supposed to … ‘Cause we are … incredible,” she said.
The Jowo singer lauds the Nigerian mentality for its unyielding characteristics.
“The Nigerian stands shoulder to shoulder vis-à-vis Whites and Westerners and, in many cases, bests them.

“There is more competition within the service industry, and I also see that my generation is producing a lot more entrepreneurs. The mindset is changing and we are aware that our oil will not last forever. Other industries such as the entertainment and fashion industries are rapidly growing and even attracting foreign interest. There is a lot happening around us to make me optimistic about where we are heading,” she said.
Bukola Ebisan Rewane-Damola is more commonly known as Ebisan. She has lived in at least three countries – England, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria.
Rewane-Damola has a degree in Accounting and Finance and a Masters degree in International Business Management but treasures music, songwriting and the arts.
