Senators have decided the fate of Bukola Saraki, the Senate president, by passing a vote of confidence on him.
Senate president Bukola Saraki during his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal
Last week, Saraki was arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on a 13-count charge of alleged corruption and false declaration of assets. He denied all accusations and insisted that the trial was politically motivated.
The Senate met today for the first time since Saraki appeared before the tribunal, and 83 of 109 members of the Senate co-sponsored a motion to give him a “vote of confidence”.
Nigerians, who watched the news and discussed the Senate president trial saga, took to social media to express their opinion about the senators’ decision to remain solidly behind Saraki.

“They have passed vote of confidence on Saraki. Those expecting impeachment should tell those sponsoring for his impeachment should watch their back too,” Norberth Chukwu noted.
“Politics is a game of numbers in this part of the world. The best APC can do is to allow the sleeping dog to be, they lost the battle from inception. At the end of this charges against Saraki, it will end up the same way Bola Ahmed case ended,” Andrew Ikwuegbu warned.
“APC should stop fight against each other and they should allow Saraki finish his four years, and then after they could look whose to be on the sit,” Abolarin Olawale Godwin advised the ruling party.
Chibuike Iriakannu praised the Senate president by saying: “Saraki is too wise I watched him get on dock and I commend him. Before he answered the judge, he bought the audience of the world same thing Nelson Mandela did. I don’t think this Saraki issue would favour the rulling party, remember what happened to Tambuwal and the PDP when he was the speaker of reps.
“Funny for Oby Ekwesili to open her big mouth and talk trash about Saraki bringing shame to the APC. That same Oby Ekwesili that was a failure during her time as minister of education or the one that campaigned for bbog during GEJ administration and has now become dumb as PMB rules. I pray PMB doesn’t make her education minister.”

“This number of senators that pass a vote of confidence on Saraki is by far enough to impeach Buhari/Osinbanjo…They should leave sleeping dog lie low,” Fred Ezekwe Natahn noted.
“This is great but Saraki and other principal officers of the Senate must still WATCH their backs and avoid the banana peals. The godfather never sleeps,” Onyenwere Ukeje warned the senate president.
Recalling the alleged stoning of Saraki in Illorin, Kwara state, where he arrived for Muslim Eid al-Adha prayers, Abidoye Adewale said:
“I will say this again… Let the senators let us knw they are all thieves and side on Saraki in other to protect their own in future… But we in Kwara state are done with Saraki!!! We will stone him over and over again… We voted for change and we are ready for the change!!”
