CULTISM: Osun Monarch Accuses Police, Vigilante Groups

The Olufon of Ifon, Oba Moruf Magbagbeola, has accused some police officers in his domain of leaking information to cult groups, which terrorize residents of the community.

The Punch reports that the monarch was speaking at a forum organised by the Police Community Relations Committee on Monday, September 28, in Osogbo.


Solomon Arase, the inspector general of police, Kola Sodipo, the commissioner of police in Osun state, top traditional rulers in the state attended the event.


“I want complain about the activities of some policemen who divulge privileged information given to them by informants. These policemen are former cult members when in school and anytime people give out information about cultists to them, they would inform the criminals and this is putting the lives of these concerned informants at risks.This happened recently in Sagamu and also in my town. I want you to help us on this,” he said.

Addressing the inspector general, the monarch said that police authorities should carry out thorough security checks on those to be recruited into the police.


According to him, vigilante groups are useless because many of them has been frustrating the efforts of the police and some of them has become terrorists in their communities.


The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, noted that traditional rulers should be more involved in terms of security arrangements in their respective domains.

The Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his administration for supporting the police and other security agencies in the state in order to make the state safe.


Meanwhile, the police in Ogun state urged cultists to renounce their various groups and get amnesty.


Abdulmajid Ali, the state commissioner of police, announced that amnesty would be given to any member of the cult groups, who within the next two weeks, renounce his membership of the illegal unions in the state.
