Zimbabwe’s ‘Iconic’ Lion Cecil Killed By Сruel Hunter

This 13-year-old lion Cecil was called the “biggest tourist attraction” at Hwange, Zimbabwe’s premier wildlife park.

But earlier this month, he was found dead — skinned and headless. According to reports, a hunter shelled out $55,000 to kill and decapitate the lion.

Cecil was lured out of the national park and was shot with a bow and arrow. The dying lion, who had a GPS collar, was then followed by the hunter for 40 hours before he was finally killed with a rifle.

Cecil’s body was found outside the town of Hwange.

“Cecil’s death is a tragedy, not only because he was a symbol of Zimbabwe but because now we have to give up for dead his six cubs, as a new male won’t allow them to live so as to encourage Cecil’s three females to mate,” Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said.

The Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association confirmed Cecil’s death. The association said that the case is being investigated.

Two people, who accompanied the hunter, have been arrested.
