Zion Harvey lost his hands and lower legs at the age of 2 as a result of a life-threatening infection.
This week he became the first kid to have a double hand transplant. This happened in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Four teams of surgeons spent 11 hours attaching the donor arms.
Zion learned to eat and play without arms. But he wanted the double hand transplant so he could pick up his little sister.
Dr. L. Scott Levin said that finding a suitable donor for children is incredibly hard.
At a press conference the success was announced! “Thank you for helping me through this bumpy road, to everyone who had helped make the surgery possible,” Harvey said.
