Pakistan, India Clash Over Nigerian Students Arrested ‘On Their Way To ISIS’

The Pakistani and Indian high commissioners to Nigeria have disagreed over reports that the two Nigerian students, who were arrested on August 7 in India, were on their way to join the terrorist group Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS).

The Punch reports that Ajjampur Ghanashyam, the Indian high commissioner, insisted that the two youths from Kano, Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu, were on their way to Pakistan to join ISIS. However, Lieutenant General Agha Farooq (retd.), the Pakistani high commissioner, disagreed with his counterpart and described the report as false.

Farooq stressed that the students could not breach the Indian/Pakistani borders, which were fortified with armed soldiers, underground mines and electrified barbed wire.

According to Farooq, the allegation against the youths was an attempt to demonize them “just because they are Nigerian Muslims.”

In a recent interview, Ghanashyam has told journalists that the high commission was worried that radicalised Nigerian students may abandon their studies in India and travel out to join the ISIS.

Ghanashyam noted that since the arrest of the two Nigerians, visa requirements have not changed, adding that the mission, however, is more careful about visa issuance to applicants.

“Visa requirements have been on the web, everybody knows, but you see, you can’t locate the mind of a man to find out what his intentions are. If he has an admission letter from our school, and you have seen it with your own eyes, then you will give him visa, but now you have to think twice.

“You don’t know, but now we believe we are taken for a ride, but now you have to go back and tell them to look after these boys and girls and make sure they don’t go out here and there, to make sure they finish their course and board a plane to go back to Nigeria.

“The mission will be more careful. Usually, we give visas to about 10 to 15% of applicants and this may further be reviewed,” he said.

Commenting on the arrest of the two boys, the high commissioner said that they were issued visas because they had all necessary documents including letters of admission from an Indian institution.

“These two boys from Kano said they wanted to study in Bangalore, we believed them and gave them student visas. They went to Bangalore last September. They spent one year, then they decided to go to ISIS, and they were trapped near the Pakistani border.

“I hope they are the exception and aberration, not the trend. I hope it would be the last of their kind. We have an association of close to 30,000 Nigerians who have graduated from India and we have 5,900 of students who are studying in India, it is quite worrying that if they go to India and from there, they go to ISIS, we would have a big issue on our hands,” he said.

However, the Pakistani ambassador dismissed the allegations against Nigerian students who were arrested by Border Security Force personnel in Punjab, India.

Farooq stressed that it was practically impossible for students to join ISIS by going through Pakistan because they would have to pass through three countries to reach Syria.

“From the pictures of the borders, you can see that there is no way the students could enter Pakistan from India because the border is well guarded with soldiers and other high-tech gadgets and it is controlled by India.

“The report that the Nigerian students were going to join ISIS is a hoax; how come it was reported by only Indian media? They just want to demonise the students because they are Nigerian Muslims,” he added.

Buhari hails D’Tigers’ victory at FIBA championship

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday congratulated the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, on the team victory over Angola in Sunday’s final of the FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, joined other sports loving Nigerians in applauding D’Tigers’ exhilarating 74-65 victory over the Angolans, which also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the men’s basketball event at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The President commended the players for displaying exemplary strength, courage, determination, patriotism, great skills and creativity to dethrone Angola, the perennial African basketball champions.

He urged members of the team and their handlers to work very hard to surpass their extraordinary heroics in Tunisia before a global audience at next year’s Olympic Games and bring even greater glory to Nigeria.

The President assured the team, its managers and the Nigerian Basketball Federation that his administration will give them and Nigeria’s other representatives at the next Olympic Games, the fullest possible support to ensure that they are well prepared to excel against the champions of other countries and regions in Rio De Janeiro.

2. Raw papaya: Papaya is considered to be a simple and easy way to get rid of excess lipids and dead skin. The papain contained in papaya is said to reduce inflammation. You can use this natural treatment for acne by simply mashing up the papaya and applying on your face.

3. Milk and honey mask: Milk has been used throughout history to cool skin and reduce the redness and soreness around acne sores and pustules. Adding the anti-microbial honey to milk is said to help in preventing growth of the bacteria. To make this topical natural acne remedy, add 1 tablespoon of milk with one tablespoon of honey and apply daily. Allow the mixture to dry before scrubbing it off.

4. Cinnamon honey mask: The antimicrobial properties of cinnamon and the antibiotic properties of honey is considered a great combination to help remove the bacteria that causes acne. To make this natural acne remedy mask, add 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Apply the paste for about 10 to 15 minutes at least two to three times a day till the face becomes clean and clear.

5.Egg whites: This is one of the home remedies for acne that is considered to be great for reducing acne and effective in acne scars removal. The high concentration of protein and vitamins in egg whites is what helps in reducing this menace. Whisk the egg whites till frothy. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and apply on your face in layers. Wash off with warm water after the mask is dry.

6. Orange peel paste: Oranges are not only refreshing, they are also a powerhouse of vitamin C and citric acid. The astringent properties help in opening pores and growth of new healthy cells. The paste can be created by grinding orange peel and mixing it with water in a mortar and pestle.‎

7. Tea tree oil: ‎The antibacterial properties of the tea tree ‎oil help in reducing acne causing bacteria. It also helps in opening pores and therefore preventing future outbreaks.

Kogi Guber: Reactions Trail Audu’s Emergence As APC’s Candidate

That the former governor of Kogi state, Abubakar Audu, emerged as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the state’s gubernatorial election yesterday is no more news.

What is however news is the fact that so many Nigerians seem not to be happy about Audu’s emergence, with many berating the APC for even allowing him to contest the party’s primaries.

Audu polled 1,109 in the primaries defeating his closest rival Yahaya Bello who received 703 votes. The chief returning officer for the primaries, was Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Interestingly, Audu has contested the governorship position of the state since the inception of the state, he contested in 1991, 1999 (which he won), 2003, 2007, 2011 and now 2015!

Senator Abe Blasts Rivers PDP Over Petition To Buhari

A former chairman of the Senate committee on petroleum, Senator Magnus Abe, has told President Muhammadu Buhari that the petition written to the president by Peoples Democratic Party members of the National Assembly from Rivers state was written in bad faith with the intent of misleading the president.

Abe, in an open letter to Buhari dated August 27, said the petition was also calculated to ridicule the army and the office of the director general of the Department of State Security (DSS).

He said that what transpired at the tribunal is that the tribunal, at the request of the petitioners (him and other petitioners) issued a subpoena directed at the chief of army staff (or any of his designated officers) and the director general of the DSS (or any of his designated officers) to appear before the tribunal and give evidence on what they witnessed during the conduct of the NASS election in the state on March 28, 2015, since they were some of the security agencies that provided security during the elections.

As This Day reports, Abe said that it was a normal practice to use a subpoena as an instrument of court to compel people to give evidence in court. He wondered why the PDP lawmakers were making a big deal out of it.

“It is therefore mischievous and indeed unreasonable for anybody, especially the Rivers PDP, to cast baseless aspersion on these gallant officers of the Nigerian Army and the DSS. One can only wonder whether it would not have been foolhardy for the chief of army staff and the DG of DSS to refuse to comply with the sacrosanct order of the tribunal.

“In fact, such an act would not only have been foolish, same is indeed a crime as refusal to comply with the tenor of a subpoena is out-rightly punishable with a criminal contempt proceeding against the culprit,” he said.

The senator declared that the fact that officers of the army and security service gave evidence before the tribunal did not amount to politicisation of the agencies and that the PDP members who wrote the petition were only crying foul when nothing was wrong.

He stated that the military officers who gave evidence were ordered to do so by the tribunal and not by APC members who are the petitioners before the tribunal.

Abe said rather than vilify the officers for complying with a court order, the PDP members ought to have commended the officers.

He told the president that the fight against corruption and lawlessness cannot be tarnished by baseless and spurious insinuations of nepotism as depicted by the petition.

“Your Excellency, this petition is just another one in the series of such letters/petitions geared towards whipping up unfavourable sentiments against members of our party,” he said.

Last week, after allegations of interference by security agencies in the hearing of cases before the state election petition tribunal, 16 senators and members of the House of Representatives from Rivers state had submitted a petition to the president to intervene.

South West Must Produce The Next PDP Chairman, Fayose Declares

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has said that it is not optional that the South-West geopolitical zone will produce the next chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, warning anything to the contrary will be resisted by the zone.

Fayose called on leaders from the zone to gear up for the contest for the position next year advising that all stakeholders in the zone must come together to make this happen, Thisday reports

He stressed that the appointment of a new chairman from the North-East for the party at the moment is a waste of time noting that the current acting chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, should be allowed to complete the tenure of his predecessor, Adamu Mua’zu.

Fayose made this statement through his spokesman, Lere Olayinka saying: “Since the PDP will pick its presidential candidate from the North in 2019, the South-west zone which has not produced the party’s national chairman should take the position next year.”

The Ekiti state governor said the reason while his championing for the emergence of a South-West candidate for the position is that since the next presidential candidate is likely to come from the north; it is only reasonable for the chairman to emerge from the South noting that South-West should produce the new helmsman of the party.

A youth leader from South-South, Afoke Akporua has however, disagreed with Fayose’s  proposition, saying the governor want to encourage illegality in the party by requesting that a caretaker committee to continue to pilot the affairs of the party at the national level.

He added that his would rob the North-East the opportunity to complete their tenure asking the party to cede the position back to the zone.

Meanwhile, Fayose had told former minister of the Federal Capital Territory,Bala Mohammed to drop his ambition of becoming the next chairman of PDP. He said this when Mohammaed visted the governor to drum support for his ambition.

AFCON: Super Eagles To Resume Training Tomorrow

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will commence training sessions tomorrow September 1, in preparation for the all-important Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier away to Tanzania.

Assistant coach of the team, Salisu Yusuf told journalists in Abuja that by then, all invited players from the domestic league and their foreign colleagues would have made their way to the federal capital, Abuja.

Nigerian players in a training session recently.

He said: “Players in the Nigeria league and those in Europe have matches on Sunday and so I do not expect us to resume training earlier than Tuesday when all the players would have arrived the previous day,” he said.

The team is scheduled to depart Abuja for Dar es Salaam this Thursday and then play the Taifa Stars of Tanzania next weekend.

“We will only have a handful of training, but that should not be a problem because all the players are playing for their various clubs. We just have to let them know how we want them to play,” Yusuf said.

Nigeria defeated Chad 2-nil in their first game which was played in Kaduna on June 13.
