Prof. Oyebode Warns Buhari Over His Appointments

Professor Akin Oyebode, a constitutional lawyer, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari  to be wary of his appointments else he would be tagged a northern hegemony.

Oyebode made the statement while he was a guest on ‘This Morning,’ a breakfast show on Television Continental (TVC), a Lagos-based TV station.

He opined that Buhari’s  appointments so far clearly favours the Northern part of the country, urging Buhari to make appointments in a manner that will give all sections of the country a sense of belonging.

He stated that he recognised the president has the prerogative to appoint whoever he feels comfortable with, but argued that the country’s constitution makes a case for federal character principle to be a determinant in making appointments.

Recall that Buhari appointed six key officials of his government yesterday, five of who are from the Northern part of the country, which was greeted by angry reactions as some described it as lopsided and sectional.

The appointments went against the predicted political permutations which had seen some key political figures being mentioned as likely appointees to the offices.

Oyebode, however, warned Nigerians from placing too much emphasis on where the appointees are from, instead he enjoined them to focus on the competence and record of performance of those appointed.
